A Day in the Life of Nancy Zhang, Senior Consultant

A Day in the Life of Nancy Zhang, Senior Consultant
Back to insights

Ever wondered what a day in the life of one of our consultants is like? This series will give you all the details! Our “Day in the Life” subject is Nancy Zhang a Senior Consultant located in Richmond, VA. Here’s what a typical day looks like for Nancy.

Morning

I have two dogs, so I usually wake up around 7:30 and take them to the field by my apartment to let them run around before I start work for the day. Sometimes, if I’m up for it, I’ll make a pot of coffee or a smoothie bowl on the days that I work from home. My client team started coming into the office every Tuesday towards the end of last year. We found that it’s quicker to solve project problems when we’re together, and I always bring my corgi, Benny, into the office to give our team morale! Mornings tend to be my “heads down” sessions where I can focus solely on development.

Lunch Time

When I’m in the office, my client team and I will all eat lunch together. Usually, we’ll order something and bring it back to the office. My current favorite spot is Shoredog Café, a local coffee and sandwich shop. It’s pretty close to the office which is great, and my team and I all order the same sandwich so it’s really easy to put our order in! When I’m working from home, lunch is a little more boring. I like to work through lunch when I’m at home, so I tend to heat up some leftovers or make something quick.

Afternoon

In the afternoons I like to take my dogs out to run around again for a change of scenery. I usually have planning meetings or sprint reviews with my team. Right now, we’re on a project for a vacation home rental company, we’re working to build new features to give their guests a better website experience. Luckily, my client team follows the idea of “ensure the meeting is a gathering of necessity, not a crowd.” I get plenty of time to actually develop, which I’m really thankful for! When I’m not in meetings, I like to take some time to get internal UDig work done, whether it’s giving teammates feedback or progressing on my goals for the year. It’s nice to give my brain a little break from coding or client work to do these little tasks.

After Work

Once I’m wrapped up for the day, I take a little bit of time to unwind and clean up my work area before cooking and trying to keep my dogs from begging for scraps. When I have soccer games, I usually don’t have time to make dinner, so I eat out. A couple of my favorite restaurants around Richmond are Beauvine Burger, Lucky AF, and Ramen Spot. On the afternoons that I don’t play soccer, you’ll likely find me playing video games – right now, my focus is on ranking up in Overwatch 2. When it’s nice out, one of my favorite things to do is sit out on my balcony and work on some crochet or embroidery. Of course, I like watching something on Netflix or HBO too!
